Cricket Crawl

Posted by David Moskowitz on September 11, 2009 at 12:58 PM

Unfortunately due to the rain and wind the organizers of the First Annual NYC and Environs Cricket Crawl have postponed the event for tonight.

The Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission will be running our Cricket Crawl in our township parks on Monday night starting at 7:30.

Details on the event which is designed to survey for katydids, including great photos and digital calls of each species is available on the Discover Life website at http://www.discoverlife.org/cricket/ The site is well worth visiting with lots of cool stuff on it.

Here is the writeup they gave us as we are the ONLY survey team in New Jersey!

The Moskowitz Expedition. While most of the orthopteran expeditions to the New York City area appear to be of the mind set thatt he best places to explore are the places with the most concrete, renegade Naturalist Dave Moskowitz has chosen a different land to conquer...EAST BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.Woodlands and fields are known to still exist here, despite invasions by the kind of people who build large box-like shelters out of some sort of white shiny flexible material that appears to come from no known living thing. A social sort of expedition leader, Dave has invited along on his expedition all of the members from the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission. Another talent of Dave's is his ability to self-blog and so he will be his own blogger on his blog.

And since I'm sure everyone who was going to come along tonight is as deeply bummed as I am, I'm posting a photo of an awesome katydid that I found in Costa Rica to hold you over until Monday.

We intend to focus on the problem of 'division of labour', namely how an ant colony divides its work force among 70-528 exam the different required tasks in response to changing external and internal conditions. The system we propose would allow the tracking, over time, of the ants engaged in different tasks as well as the ants that switch between tasks to scjp maintain colony plasticity. In a second stage of the experiments, we will employ automatic computer controlled doors that would enable us, for example, to prevent specific iseb exam questions ants from switching tasks. We will use these novel tools to investigate the role of different individuals and their importance to colony performance. We will focus our study on the importance of phenotypic diversity and ant individuality for division of labour. Would a hypothetical colony of perfectly identical ants perform as well as a colony composed of unique individuals? The role of individuality in division of labour is likely to be of key importance in other mcpd dumps social insect phenomena as well as having implications for emerging technologies such as collective robotics and sensor networks.
